Today My Grandma Rasmussen would be 87 years old.
She passed away 8 years ago and I still miss her everyday.
My Grandma was amazing. She made whoever she was with feel like they were the most important person in the world, she could make anyone laugh, and always brought out the best in others. She was funny, like really funny. She gave the best hugs and had the softest hands I've ever felt. She supported us in every single thing we did, she was at every dance performance, sporting event, church programs, you name it- she was there. She was sarcastic most of the time- maybe that is where I get it from? She had a great memory and held on to the things that meant the most to her. She loved her family deeply, especially her grandchildren. I loved spending time with her and would get so excited to see her white car in the driveway when I got home from school.
I was very close to her, I felt like she got me and I got her.
I think we are a lot alike in a lot of ways.
I wish everyday she was still here to meet all these new Great-grandchildren in our extended family, she would have LOVED each of them. (They would have loved her to.)
This past weekend my Mom put together the greatest birthday celebration ever in Honor of her. It was amazing. She really went out of her way to make sure every single detail was something Grandma would approve of... I have a feeling Grandma was completely honored with the extent of the party! It was fantastic!
The food was incredible: Chicken croissant sandwiches, potato casserole, pickles on a stick, and the most delicious raisin cookies I've ever had! All of which was great on their own but were made even better with such a cute set up. My grandma had this thing for picnics, it was her favorite thing to do, so this was all set up in a picnic style, we loaded our baskets then went outside to eat. The kids were even given their very own food and basket full of kid friendly food. Seriously, does it get any cuter?!!
We missed all the cousins that couldn't be there, but these kids had a blast playing together all day.
(Millie 1, Leighton 3, Emlin 4, Lydia 4, Carmen 5, Jack 5, Ryder 6, Mack 7, Austin 9)
Then after we ate the Aunts continued to Spoil the grandkids rotten with tons of games and prizes. Marilyn set up a fun pumpkin decorating area, LeeAnn did a kid's fishing pond with amazing prizes, and there was also a cake walk and Witch hat toss area. The kids were in heaven and just ran from one thing to the next taking it all in.
It was so much fun.
After the games we went inside and let the kids play. The adults sat around and did a Favorite Things gift exchange. We had to bring a gift that reminded us of Grandma to give. There were so many great ideas: Lottery tickets, pantyhose, Avon lotion, candy dishes, baby dolls, embroidery patterns, books, paper dolls, McDonalds gift cards, Chinese checkers games, puzzles, laundry baskets, Little Women DVD, and Werthers Original carmel treats.
The weather was perfect and the company was even better.
It made me miss her terribly, but so Thankful to know that Ill get to be with her again someday.
I live for weekends like this.
