This may sound strange,
but I have always wanted to live on enough property and be able to "water" it. Now we do and learning this whole new thing has been a lot of fun for our family. We've had a lot to learn- watering time slots, "water rights," culverts, and head gates have pretty much become the topic of most of our conversations lately. Im beginning to understand why farmers take "watering" so serious- it's serious business! We have been blessed to have great neighboring farmers show us the ropes and help guide us through it all.
Right now we own enough shares that we can water our property for about 10 hours, every two weeks. It's a very regimented system and everyone has the same schedule, if you don't follow your allotted time- you better watch out! Most of our time is in the middle of the night, and you bet I'm not about to get up and go check on it!! The Man does that part- and lets be honest, he does most of the heavy lifting! I mainly just watch to make sure nothing overflows and pull the smaller head gates out as needed.
The kids, well, they just run around in the mud and water.
This was our first day out, we have since bought the kids watering boots- lesson learned!
Yes, that is me all pregnant and lifting big ol' head gates, so proud! It was harder than I thought it would be! I'm also in charge of getting all the crap out of the water flow- so I get to dig around in the water with the pitch fork, which is always fun.
We are so excited for all the new things we are going to be able to learn while living on this property, it makes me so happy just thinking about it!
In the mean time, I'm trying to be patient waiting for permits to be pulled and hopefully in the next week a hole to be dug and construction to begin.. crossing our fingers!
